The Stairs

Post by Henry Marczak »

We recently moved into a nice hi-raise apartment, on the 15th floor. I did the stairs up today, 2 at a time, did have me huffing and puffing, no stopping or using the handrail. Its actually only 13 floors since 1 is the main floor and they don't count the 13th.

Did the stairs again, this time from the underground parking P2, this made it 15 flights. I challenged my daughter and BF to do it and she timed it, they were behind a bit so my time was quicker than their 3 mins. My wife has now done it several times, she's shortish so 1 step at a time. Sometimes they test the fire alarms and the elevator is switched off, so one day I just may have to use the stairs after work one day.

Henry, that's great! I once had a doctor a few years ago I saw on the 5th floor and I could take that 2 steps at a time without getting out of breath. I haven't taken on a 15 flight run. There is a football stadium near me and I've done interval runs up and down those concrete steps, and that's about the most vigorous aerobic workout I've ever done... and I'm a lifelong runner. Now at almost 77 I can handle jogs only 2-3 times a week, intervals mostly, maybe 12 min, plus a 9' bike ride each way to the field. I can't live without running. And on other days I add Atlas exercises. Keep at it, Henry!

I thought I'd try 3 stairs at a time, it's a bit of a stride and have to watch my balance, got to the 9th floor and switched to 2 at a time.

Hi Henry,
I don't know.. 3 at a time seems a little too high for me, as it brings balance issues too.
Remember Charles Atlas recommendation: train don't strain.

Each has to determine their abilities, for me I'm very fit, 5' 8" 136lbs.
