A tip for this exercise if having difficulty with balance is to have a pole or wall behind you.

any suggestions for other exercise requiring balance...my hips are abit off and balancing on one leg is near impossible for example, I hold on the a tall chair back for now.

For squatting you can hang a strap from above, like from a hook in a basement floor joist. I hold onto the ends of a Japanese martial art belt looped from a hook and do one leg squatting. Helps with control going down, also works the arms and shoulders a bit.
